Whois tool is started from 1982, it helps law enforcement agents to identify domain owner's authority. Nowadays, if you pay Godaddy an extra fee, Godaddy can help you to hide your contact information, so your phone number and email address will not appear when others do a whois search on your domain.

Should I hide my contact information in Whois search result?

For regular website, I suggest people do not hide their contact information in whois, because it represents your website's reputation and you don't need to pay a costly annual fee. However, if your privacy is very important to you or you want to stay away from potential spam, whois privacy protection can be a worthwhile investment.
